English
At Lamberhurst St. Mary’s we have created an English curriculum which enables our pupils to:
‘Speak and write fluently so that they can communicate their ideas and emotions to others, and through their reading and listening, others can communicate with them………… to acquire knowledge and to build on what they already know. All the skills of language are essential to participating fully as a member of society.’
(National Curriculum in England).
We aim to develop pupils’ abilities with an integrated programme of Speaking & Listening, Reading, Writing & Vocabulary. We also strive to encourage all children to have fun and to become enthusiastic and engaged with English.
We ‘promote high standards of language and literacy by equipping pupils with a strong command of the spoken and written language, and to develop their love of literature through widespread reading for enjoyment.’ (National Curriculum in England)
We are committed to providing rich and varied opportunities for children to develop culturally, and to increase their cultural capital through the study of a wide variety of texts. We use carefully selected texts and, across each year group, cover fiction, non-fiction and poetry genres, exploring our rich and diverse literary heritage.Through our English Curriculum, we strive to inspire, by showing how important reading, writing, speaking and listening skills are in the real world.
English does not stand alone. Our broad and balanced curriculum offers multiple opportunities to practice learnt skills and to link and transfer learning to other subject areas. This is achieved through ambitious and accurate use of subject related vocabulary and language, to provide secure foundations for life-long learning.
